USB routing is the main layout concern. D+ and D− take separate routes with several layer changes. Both ESD-to-resistor paths contain four via transitions; the MCU-side D− path adds another two. Move the series resistors closer to the MCU and route the signals together over a continuous ground reference. Microchip specifically recommends short differential routing and avoiding accumulated vias. This is a reliability risk, not a demonstrated failure. ATmega32U4 guidance, §21.5. Fit the support plate before soldering the keys. The project’s instructions say an already soldered board may require desoldering to install the plate. Coordinate this with the assembler and confirm through-hole assembly for the keys, encoder, and slide switch. The package needs an application-firmware plan. I found no macro firmware or compiled HEX in the release. Define key scanning, debounce, encoder behavior, USB HID reports, RGB control, and flashing. The factory USB bootloader does not provide macro-keyboard functionality. RGB power-off needs careful sequencing. Q_RGB disconnects LED power while its data input remains connected to the powered MCU. Drive data low before switching the LEDs off and keep it low while unpowered; otherwise input injection can partially power the first LED. LED electrical limits. Check maximum-load voltage and current. Six 12 mA-per-channel RGB LEDs imply approximately 216 mA at full white, before other loads. Establish brightness and USB suspend limits. Measure VCC after the cable, fuse, MOSFET, and PCB losses—especially at maximum brightness.
